Ecohouse (Play Yard)

Location: Long Beach, CA
Client: Children Today
Type: Landscape
Size: 6,000 SF
Offering young children in transition an encouraging space to play

The rear play yard of the Ecohouse facility was formerly a large grass patch with a single piece of play equipment disconnected from the main buildings. Studio One Eleven re-envisioned the 8,000 s.f. rear yard space as a child-centric outdoor play oasis for exploring nature and creative play.

Thoughtfully designed garden rooms, sculpted land forms, permeable pathways and non-traditional play features create a true learning environment for multiple age groups. An organic vegetable garden with fruit espaliers creates a linkage to the 6,000 s.f. central courtyard which features an artificial turf lawn for active play and events, a rubberized play surface for toddlers, a shaded outdoor picnic area and activity courts.
