The Mahalia

Location: North Hollywood, CA
Client: Daylight Community Developmen
This three-story low-rise supportive housing development will offer critical supportive housing in North Hollywood for homeless individuals and transition-aged youth.

The Mahalia, a 49-unit metal-framed modular community, named after the soulful singer Mahalia Jackson’s version of A Satisfied Mind, resonates that life can have more meaning when we are surrounded by people who love and support us. The building form reiterates this theme by encircling a community courtyard for gatherings. This courtyard interlinks the development to various scaled amenity spaces. The community spaces are located along Vanowen Street and enhanced by an outdoor area surrounding an existing tree. Transitioning to the residential neighborhood along Lemp Avenue, the building visually steps down and conceals the vehicular entry. The open stairs are brightly colored to encourage active pedestrian circulation and visual and physical connection to the outdoors. This community is the first building in a scattered sites proposal that received HHH Innovation funds and will add much-needed housing to this North Hollywood neighborhood.
