Studio One Eleven’s 2026 Summer
Internship Program
At Studio One Eleven, our integrated practice of Urban Design, Landscape Architecture, and Architecture creates a unique environment for emerging professionals to learn, collaborate, and make a meaningful impact. This summer, we welcomed four interns to join us in our Long Beach office and participate in an immersive 8-week cross-disciplinary program designed to expose them to the full spectrum of our work and demonstrate how these disciplines come together to shape vibrant communities.
This year’s intern cohort included Jacob Castro (Cal Poly Pomona, Urban Design), Karolyn Maeda (University of Washington Seattle, Landscape Architecture), Laura Ramos-Ramirez (Louisiana State University, Landscape Architecture), and Kristal Sarman (University of Southern California, Architecture). Each brought a unique perspective, background, and set of experiences to the program, enriching discussions and fostering a collaborative learning environment that reflected the interdisciplinary nature of Studio One Eleven’s practice.
Throughout the program, they worked alongside teams on active projects, supported firm-wide initiatives, received hands-on training from staff, and visited both completed projects and active construction sites. Beyond gaining technical experience, they developed a deeper understanding of the collaborative process that drives our practice.
A hallmark of the internship was a hands-on design-build challenge through Canstruction® Orange County, where the intern team designed, raised funding, procured, and constructed a sculpture made entirely from canned and nonperishable food items. The full build will be on display at South Coast Plaza through September 2026. Following the exhibition, all materials were donated to support local families in need.
The program culminated with the Summer Research Project, where the intern team worked together across disciplines to explore innovative approaches for weaving together Downtown Long Beach’s fragmented corridors, examining how design can improve connectivity, accessibility, and community experience.
By combining real-world project experience, interdisciplinary collaboration, community engagement, and creative problem-solving, Studio One Eleven’s Summer Internship Program offered a dynamic and inspiring introduction to the future of design.
