Studio One Eleven Supports FIFA Fan Zones at Union Station and West Harbor

This summer, two Studio One Eleven project sites, Union Station and West Harbor, served as official FIFA Fan Zones during the FIFA World Cup. While the two sites represent very different contexts, one an established historic landmark and the other a new waterfront development approaching completion, each provided a unique setting for fans to gather. We worked closely with both clients to prepare the venues for the events, demonstrating the flexibility of these public spaces and their potential to host future civic and sporting events in Los Angeles.

At Union Station, Studio One Eleven supported Metro and the event team with planning and coordination for the temporary installations throughout the historic station. Using our existing models and documentation of the property, we assisted with event programming, advertising opportunities and wayfinding, occupancy planning, fire access, and permitting. The team also led the coordination, engineering, and installation of a large temporary LED screen in the passenger concourse, creating a central viewing area for fans throughout the event.

The Fan Zone extended across multiple indoor and outdoor spaces at Union Station, with live match broadcasts, food vendors, performances, and public programming. The event brought tens of thousands of visitors to the station over four days and highlighted its continued evolution as both a transportation hub and a civic destination.

At West Harbor, Studio One Eleven’s role was different. As the lead designer for the new waterfront development, our focus was on preparing the project to host the Fan Zone while construction was still underway. The event took place in the future waterfront amphitheater, which was nearing completion but remained an active construction site. Our team worked with the client and consultants to help make the venue ready for public use, coordinating construction, site readiness, and approvals required to safely host the event.

The Fan Zone gave visitors an early opportunity to experience West Harbor before its official opening. Guests explored the new waterfront promenade and amphitheater while watching World Cup matches, offering an early preview of the future restaurants, entertainment, and public spaces that are currently under development.
