4th Street Parklet

In 2012 Studio One Eleven completed the first parklets, also known as street decks, in Southern California.

These decks typically replace curbside parking fronting a shop in order to provide outdoor dining for restaurants wanting to expand. Since then, Studio One Eleven has completed numerous installations throughout Los Angeles and San Diego counties, including three parklets in downtown Long Beach that reflect the evolution and expansion of their use.

Two of the parklets, one located on Pine Avenue and the other on Fourth Street are designed as contemporary seating courts to support multiple restaurants. Permitted, financed and constructed by the landlord of “The Streets” development, the parklets provide convenient outdoor dining. The landlord is compensated for the investment by charging each tenant additional rent.

Pine Avenue Parklet

Parklets have taken on uses other than for public seating or outdoor dining. The street deck for Groundwork Fitness is the first training parklet in the country. Workout routines are performed with various equipment within the interiors of the gym and the parklet now serves as an outdoor fitness station. Located on the street, this training station animates the sidewalk and encourages people to live a healthy lifestyle.

One of the newest projects, Eat Chow, is the first of its kind in Costa Mesa, California. The 7’x 52’ parklet features distinctive black metal planters, red umbrellas, built-in seating, and wood accents designed to complement the restaurant’s modern aesthetic.

This project was the result of a two-year collaborative effort with Studio One Eleven, Costa Mesa Planning, Public Works Departments and Eat Chow Co-Owners Brian McReynolds and Amy Frawley.
