Vanowen Apartments

Location: North Hollywood, CA
Client: Daylight Community Development
This three-story low-rise supportive housing development will offer critical supportive housing in North Hollywood for homeless individuals and transition-aged youth.

Vanowen is the first Proposition HHH Challenge project to close financing and begin construction. The project utilizes modular construction and a simpler capital stack to bring supportive housing to North Hollywood faster and cheaper. This innovative project will bring 48 units of supportive housing online before the end of 2022.

The Vanowen Apartments, a 48-unit metal-framed modular community reflect the belief that life can have more meaning when we are surrounded by people who love and support us. The building's form echoes this theme by encircling a community courtyard for gatherings.

This centralized communal space interlinks the project to various scaled amenities located along Vanowen Street which are additionally enhanced by landscaping along the periphery.

Transitioning to the residential neighborhood along Lemp Avenue, the building visually steps down and conceals the vehicular entry. The open stairs are brightly colored to encourage active pedestrian circulation as well as visual and physical connection to the outdoors.

"With 49 units of permanent supportive housing, the Vanowen Apartments represent an important expansion of the housing stock in CD2. This project, which was funded by measure HHH, provides further evidence that the City is deeply committed to building safe, secure housing for our neighbors experiencing homelessness. " - Mayor Eric Garcetti, City of Los Angeles
