Before

George Washington Carver Park, formerly Willowbrook Park, honors the legacy of George Washington Carver, a renowned African American scientist, educator, and inventor.

Nearby Carver Manor, featuring charming WW2-era homes designed by the legendary architect Paul Revere Williams, also pays tribute to Mr. Carver, recognizing and celebrating his historical contributions. The $1.5 million playground renovation draws inspiration from the farming fields and crops Mr. Carver championed, such as peanuts, sweet potatoes, and soybeans. This thoughtful design not only celebrates Carver’s contributions to agriculture but also fosters an engaging and educational environment for children.

It connects them to the history and significance of his work while celebrating Willowbrook’s agrarian heritage. The renovation includes all new play equipment and surfacing, accessibility improvements, lighting, site furnishings, planting, and stormwater upgrades.

The organic forms and layout of the playground design supports a series of multi-sensory spaces that offer a variety of learning experiences through interactive play. This enables children of multiple age groups to explore spaces that develop their motor skills and provide diverse activities.  This playground has been honored as a Project of Excellence within the National Demonstration Site (NDS) Network, reflecting commitment to promoting physical activity through active play and encouraging the developmental progression of skills through healthy movement.
