Quick Facts

An interactive hub showcasing the port’s global impact, innovative operations, and commitment to environmental stewardship. The space invites visitors into an immersive experience that brings to life the history, technology, and sustainable future of one of the world’s busiest seaports.
The Port of Long Beach headquarters, known as the Port Administration Building, was completed in July 2019 as part of the Long Beach Civic Center campus. Studio One Eleven was commissioned to design an interactive and immersive exhibition space highlighting the port’s history, operations, and commitment to environmental stewardship. In collaboration with interiors group Dyelot and exhibit designer Tessellate Studio, the team delivered a dynamic experience featuring a 3D map table, an LED video wall showcasing port operations, a historical timeline dating back to the port’s 1911 founding, and exhibits highlighting emerging technologies and innovations. Located on the building’s third floor, the 11,000-square-foot space serves potential port tenants, business partners, and dignitaries, as well as community members, students, and other invited guests.
Visitors disembark to the third floor through a wood paneled lobby that serves as a portal into an open floor plan exhibition room. The space is organized around a twenty by thirty-foot 3D model of the port highlighting key operations. The area is defined by exhibits that explain the Port’s history identifying innovation, community benefits and sustainable measures. The space is filled with symbology, overhead at an angle is a lower steel ceiling representing the underside of a container ship, wood tones reflect driftwood and exhibit panels are tones of blue green representing various depths of water. Four exhibits are wrapped in corrugated metal, recalling shipping containers, along with a large conference room which acts as a terminating feature, screening a kitchen which supports special events. Sustainability measures for the interiors project include a LEED Gold ID+C certification.
The Global Trade and Education Center is named after Alan Lowenthal, who represented Long Beach in the State Legislature from 1998 to 2012 and then served in Congress for 10 years until his retirement in 2023. He was instrumental in supporting sustainability measures at the Port of Long Beach during his public career.
