On January 2, 1980, Don Miguel González, an immigrant with a vision, opened the first Northgate González Market in a modest 3,000-square-foot space on Anaheim Boulevard.

The market quickly became more than a place to shop—it was a source of beloved foods and flavors, a celebration of culture, and a cornerstone of the neighborhood. It embodied the power of perseverance, family, and community.

Today, the legacy of Northgate González Markets continues to resonate in Anaheim, offering an opportunity to honor its history while building on its foundations. Studio One Eleven was engaged by the City of Anaheim to reimagine this site through a process rooted in collaboration, respect for its past, and aspirations for its future. In partnership with community stakeholders, City staff, and CulinaryLab, the project set out to design a vision that reflects the enduring values of connection, opportunity, and shared growth.

Through an inclusive and thoughtful process, a new chapter began to take shape. Together, we envisioned a space that could nurture local talent, cultivate community, and inspire the next generation. Central to this vision is a program focused on empowering youth by providing opportunities to develop culinary and small business skills, unlocking pathways to success in Anaheim’s vibrant food and hospitality industries.

The site itself is designed as a dynamic hub for the community, blending spaces for learning, gathering, and sustainability. A culinary lab offers hands-on training and entrepreneurial opportunities, while community gardens provide fresh ingredients and foster a deeper connection to the land. Open, adaptable spaces create a venue for events, workshops, and celebrations that bring people together and strengthen community bonds.

This project is more than a transformation of a physical space—it is a reimagining of what is possible when history, vision, and collaboration converge. By honoring the lessons of the González family, it serves as a testament to their enduring legacy while building a brighter future for Anaheim. Studio One Eleven is proud to be a part of this journey, creating a place where dreams continue to take shape, culture thrives, and the community grows stronger together.
