The Journey is a 40-unit, 100 percent affordable supportive housing community located on Lincoln Boulevard in Venice.

Designed to house up to 80 residents, primarily transition-aged youth ages 16 to 25 and older adults who have experienced chronic homelessness, the project promotes intergenerational connection and healing through supportive architecture and programming.

At the ground level, a nonprofit youth services organization anchors the site with offices, retail, supportive spaces, and bike parking, creating an active and inviting street frontage. The name “The Journey” reflects the project’s intent: to offer a safe, uplifting path toward stability, purpose, and community.

Architecture reinforces this narrative through a series of stepped terraces, open-air staircases, and outdoor rooms that stitch together communal and private spaces. Elevated pathways and stairs create a hill town experience, offering changing views, natural ventilation, and quiet moments of retreat in the heart of the city. The massing carefully transitions to the residential neighborhood behind while deep-set windows, angled forms, and a high-performance envelope enrich the building’s presence along the boulevard.

Constructed using a panelized modular system, the project saved time and reduced onsite disruptions while optimizing coordination across trades. Rooftop solar, passive cooling, and planted terraces contribute to a resilient and sustainable design. A beloved mural honoring Nelson Mandela, originally painted on the site, has been faithfully recreated, reinforcing themes of peace and perseverance. This gesture, along with the building’s layered design and purposeful programming, establishes a lasting anchor of dignity, support, and beauty in a changing urban corridor.
